Rivers in Dispute: Urban Dispossession and Community Reappropriation of the Industrial Landscape in Barranquilla (Colombia)

Abstract

This article analyses the transformation of Barranquilla’s riverside industrial landscape urban from the perspective of geographies of contestation. Based on the study of the Barranquillita, La Loma and Barlovento Partial Plan (2004) and semi-structured interviews coded in ATLAS.ti, it explores the tensions between urban planning, river memory, and community (re)appropriation practices. The results show how port renewal policies driven by real-estate valorisation have fostered both material and symbolic dispossession, while riverine communities sustain repertoires of resistance and collective imagination. Framed within the urban geography of the Colombian Caribbean, the case reveals fluvial margins as contested territories and as spaces of social autonomy facing the neoliberal city.
