The Role of Critical Geography in Defending Yasuní against Oil Extraction in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Abstract

The Yasuní-ITT Initiative was an original climate justice proposal that called for financial compensation from a peripheral country such as Ecuador in exchange for leaving its oil underground, in order to protect Amazonian biodiversity and Indigenous peoples living in voluntary isolation. Its cancellation in 2013, paving the way for oil extraction, gave rise to new forms of youth organisation in the streets and on social media aimed at convening a national referendum to overturn the government’s decision. The state’s justification rested on a territorial fallacy claiming that only 1/1000 of the affected area would be exploited, which in turn transformed spatial quantification into a key tool for halting the advance of oil extraction. Although the referendum was delayed for ten years by fraud and institutional injustice, in 2023 nearly 60% of the Ecuadorian population voted against oil exploitation in Yasuní. Over this decade, a broad coalition of Indigenous organisations, environmental movements, human rights groups, and critical scientists succeeded in slowing the expansion of oil extraction. This article focuses on the role of critical geography’s repertoires of struggle and the impact they achieved during the Yasuní Referendum, particularly through the articulation of counter-cartographic practices and institutional advocacy. In doing so, it reflects on the role of critical sciences within exercises of direct democracy, highlighting how spatial knowledge and critical methodologies can contribute to contesting extractivism and reshaping environmental governance.
