Abstract

The intention of this paper is to briefly outline the genesis of early 19th century utopian ideas about revolutionary armed forces, the transmutation of these ideas, and the emergence of a post-revolutionary army in the Soviet Union that has little in common with the original "models." The idea is that the initial mistrust of the socialists of the last century towards professional armies was fully justified by events; that the leaders of the Soviet Communist Party remain concerned about the role of the professional military within their state, and that no satisfactory solution has yet been devised that would achieve full integration of the military professionals into the Party-dominated political system.
