Abstract

From the perspective of international economic policy, China ranks second among the world economic powers. This paper explains the reason for the relative importance of China today, based on the process of economic reform initiated in the late 1970s to have a vision of the reforms carried out, the factors of success and also their costs. It also tries to draw attention to the thirteen years of negotiations to allow China to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). Finally, the international economic relations of China within the framework of the multilateral trade system are discussed, focusing basically on the so-called triangular trade (China-Hong Kong-Taiwan) and the role played by the ex-colonies Hong-Kong and Macao to structure the China Economic Area.
