EN Visual data literacy in the teaching of Design in Colombia

Authors

Abstract

Visual data literacy can be understood as a process of approxima- tion to data and its visualization that brings together ideas of visual literacy and data literacy, developed mainly in countries with a strong data culture. In the Colombian context, although its use is not customary, it is possible to recognize it from the teaching practice in data visualization design or Data- viz. In this sense, it is of academic value to understand this concept from the particularities of the teaching of professional design in Colombia, as part of a region with low rates of numerical literacy. Thus, three specific objectives were outlined: to recognize Dataviz teaching practices, to inquire about liter- acy processes in these contexts, and to build a practical perspective of such literacy. And, an interpretive case study and two data collection instruments were designed: a survey and a semi-structured interview with a group of university professors. From which processes, skills, exercises, and notions of visual data literacy were evidenced and a conceptual map was built synthe- sizing said findings. All this shows a literacy approach that seeks a critical approach to the data, without forgetting its correct presentation.
